Indonesia is considering lowering its 2030 electric bus adoption target to 80%

Indonesia's Transportation Ministry is considering lowering its 2030 electric bus adoption target to 80% from 90%, citing fiscal constraints and challenges facing local governments, as Indonesia's news agency Antara is reporting after a press conference in Jakarta with Road Transport Director Muiz Thohir.

The proposed revision to the urban public transport electrification roadmap is prompted by amongst others regional governments' ability to finance the transition to electric-powered public transport. "The previous target was 90 percent by 2030, but we are now considering around 80 percent by 2030, followed by 90 percent by 2040 and 100 percent by 2045," Muiz said. The revised targets are being discussed with the Indonesian Institute for Transportation

and Development Policy (ITDP). A concept for the regulatory framework is targeted for completion in November 2026. Also incentives to support public transport electrification are in the making. The two institutions have developed E-Bus Hub, a digital platform providing information on electric bus distribution, policy references and simulation tools to help local governments plan electric bus deployment.
